7-Day Ultimate Wildlife Expedition: Atlas to Sahara

Depart early from Marrakech, ascending into the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka pass. We will make strategic stops along the route to observe mountain species and admire the dramatic landscapes before arriving in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon. Overnight: Lodge or Hotel in Ouarzazate.

After breakfast, explore the surroundings of Ouarzazate for early morning birdwatching. We then continue toward the Dades Valley, stopping in dry riverbeds (oueds) and rocky plateaus to track a mix of desert and mountain birds. Overnight: Boumalne Dades.

Set out early for the famous Tagdilt Track, widely recognized as one of the premier birdwatching sites in southern Morocco. Spend the day observing highly sought-after and rare desert species before returning to our accommodation. Overnight: Boumalne Dades.

Begin the day visiting the towering Todra Gorges to spot rock-dwelling bird species. We then journey east through lush oases and arid valleys, finally arriving at the edge of the Sahara Desert where we settle into our desert lodge. Overnight: Desert Lodge in Merzouga.

Dedicate a full day to specialized desert birding. We will navigate the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi and explore the surrounding rocky sectors near Rissani to locate well-camouflaged Saharan fauna. Overnight: Desert Lodge in Merzouga.

Leave the deep desert behind and travel through the vast, semi-arid landscapes of the Draa Valley. We will make several birdwatching stops along this remote route before reaching the Atlantic coast in the evening. Overnight: Hotel in Agadir.

Following breakfast, take the optional opportunity to explore the coastal wetlands of Souss-Massa National Park. This pristine reserve offers the chance to observe rare coastal birds, including the critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis, before concluding the expedition (timed according to departure flights).
